Review My Heart : When Music Becomes a Bridge to Personal Growth
❓ What would happen if a school music club was not only a place to sing, but also a space to discover the meaning of friendship and courage?
That is what is offered in a short story of about 5000 words entitled My Heart by Darinsclass from a website called er-central. This fictional teen drama story tells the life of a lonely girl who is in the process of improving herself and building relationships with those around her. The story presents a school setting that is suitable for young readers, where musical theater can be a bridge for growth, learning, and practicing courage.
And now, let's go to analysis the story elements!
1. Characters🎭
The characters in this story are portrayed
quite realistically. The main character is Irene, a girl who has just moved
house with her family: her father, mother, and brother. She is shy and lacks
confidence, but has great potential. This represents teenagers today who are
often quiet but actually have potential that needs to be honed. She never had
any friends at her old school, but at her new school she tries to adapt and
befriend Rosa.
Rosa is a supporting character who is also portrayed quite realistically by the author. She is Irene's friend in the musical club. Her character easily adapts to Irene, making her Irene's best friend. At first, she is portrayed as a friend who understands Irene, but a role in a musical drama creates distance between them.
Kamil is Irene's younger brother and is portrayed as being very supportive of his sister's interests. Irene's parents are also portrayed as being very supportive of their child, striving to make their family warm and harmonious. Irene's teacher, Mr. Lukas, and her friends in the musical club are portrayed quite realistically. The children in the musical club are very close-knit, and their teacher is a very responsible club director.
2. Setting🏫
The setting presented by the author is that of a school and
the excitement of a musical drama club. It is described in simple terms, which
is very relevant to school life in general and relevant to teenage readers. The
author creates this setting with a warm and familiar atmosphere, where the main
character's family always creates a warm, harmonious, and supportive
environment, even though the main character himself is a quiet child. The
atmosphere at his school, with the musical drama competition at that time
running smoothly and successfully, creates a touching and proud atmosphere.
3. Plot & Pacing🎥
The plot of My Heart is simple, smooth, and meaningful. The
conflict presented is not tense, but rather reflects issues commonly faced by
teenagers. The story begins with the introduction of the main character, the
inner conflict she faces, and the courage she finds because of her great
interest in musical theater. Although the plot is simple, it carries a powerful
message about personal growth.
4. Themes & Symbols🎨
The main themes presented by Darinsclass in this story are
self-discovery and friendship. Musicals symbolize Irene's inner journey to find
courage within herself. Initially, she was a child who had difficulty adapting
and only liked musicals. When she saw that there was a musical club at her new school,
she became very interested and plucked up the courage to join a competition
with her club team. It was there that she finally found a friend who truly
understood her.
5. Language & Styles💬
Darinsclass's writing style is simple and light, suitable for beginner readers who want to learn English because it is easy to follow. Although it conveys a meaningful message, the writing style is easy for readers to follow. Since this work was also written by children, I found this story in the Student Writings section. This can also be seen from the author's name, Darinsclass, which suggests that this may be a group of children creating a work together.
When reading the story My Heart, I
felt happy and calm because the plot was relaxed and relatable to the lives of
teenagers today. The author creates a warm atmosphere at the beginning of the
story, depicting the closeness between the main character and her family, with
her father taking Irene to see a musical, which is where she developed her love
for musicals. A sad atmosphere is present at the beginning of the story, where
Irene's family has to move to a new city, and I felt sad too if I had to leave
the house that used to be my home and all the memories that came with it, but
life must go on.
However, I was disappointed with some parts. The closeness
between the two friends, Rosa and Irene, was not described in detail, such as
how Irene could immediately feel comfortable with Rosa when she had previously
been a child who did not socialize well. Also, the conflict was resolved too
quickly, so readers did not have much time to feel tense about the conflict
that was presented.
Pros and Cons of My Heart Short Story
The pros of this story are its
relaxed plot and relatable conflicts with everyday life, especially for
teenagers, such as Irene, who has difficulty socializing with her classmates
and feels nervous when trying to make friends. The story is written in a
language that is easy to follow for readers of all ages. It has messages and
life values that can be applied in real life, such as the character's courage
to express herself through musical drama, which is suitable for teenagers
today, as anything they are interested in can become a great potential for them
in the future.
The cons of this story is the lack of development of the supporting characters. The main character is described with a fairly clear depth of character, but the supporting characters, such as family and friends, lack depth, as they only serve as complements. The resolution of the conflict feels very quick, so readers are not very immersed in the conflict presented, and some emotional moments feel under-explored.
In conclusion, Darinsclass's My Heart truly provides a warm yet light reading experience. Although it is short, it is full of meaning. The lesson I took away from it is that we should have the courage to express ourselves, and that music can heal our hardened hearts. We don't need to worry about being outdone by someone else's talent because we are great with the potential we have. I recommend this story for young readers, students, or anyone who needs a light read with a reflective tone.
