 Blood Moon Phenomenon,
September 7–8: A Mesmerizing Night Sky

Vito Technology, Inc.

On the night of September 7 to the early morning of September 8, 2025, the world is treated to one of the most stunning celestial phenomena: a total lunar eclipse or better known as the Blood Moon. For Indonesians, this phenomenon can be enjoyed almost completely with the naked eye.

What is a Lunar Eclipse?

A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth is directly between the Sun and the Moon, so the Sun's light that normally makes the Moon shine is covered by the Earth's shadow.

These shadows are of two types:
  1. Umbra - the deep, dark shadow of the Earth's core.
  2. Penumbral - a faint shadow on the periphery.
When the Moon passes through the umbra, there is a total eclipse. But don't imagine that the Moon will disappear completely. Instead, it reflects a stunning red light. That's why it's called the Blood Moon.

Blood Moon 2025 Fun Facts

1. Extremely long duration

Usually, a total eclipse only lasts about 60-70 minutes. This lunar eclipse lasts about 5 hours and 27 minutes, with a totality phase of 82 minutes. One of the longest in the decade of the 2020s.

2. Part of the Saros 128 Cycle

Lunar eclipses have a cycle called Saros that repeats every 18 years. This eclipse is part of the Saros 128 series, which also gave birth to an eclipse in 2007.

3. Mysterious Red Color

The red light that appears is the result of the Earth's atmosphere filtering it. Dust and gas particles in the atmosphere reflect blue light, while red light escapes and wraps around the Moon. The more pollution or volcanic particles in the air, the more intense the red color.

More than Just a Trend

As an admirer of the beauty of the universe, I see this phenomenon as not just about the sky changing color, but also about how humans respond to the wonders of nature. There is a sense of awe that we all share, although in different ways, some choose to photograph it, some reveal the beauty through social media, and some just quietly enjoy it.

In my opinion, this lunar eclipse or Blood Moon can also be a bridge between science and culture or myths that had spread. Now, even though it can be explained scientifically, the sense of awe remains. In fact, the combination of the two makes it feel even more special.

The Blood Moon phenomenon of September 7-8, 2025 proves that trends don't always have to be viral things that quickly disappear. There are trends that are born from the sky, which not only feast the eyes but also move the heart. Blood Moon is not just a spectacle of the night sky, but also an invitation to reflect, that we are a small part of a vast universe.
